Chances are you’ve heard of Pikarin at some point in your life if you’ve been involved or interested in the Japanese fashion community. Hikari Shiina made her gyaru debut in 2009 as Pikarin in the magazines Ranzuki and EGG before graduating to Popteen as an ota-gal, and even made the cover on Men’s EGG Youth.
Her first appearance on the cover of Egg magazine's August issue was also a significant moment for her, where she appeared alongside Kanako Kawabata (My Current Gyaru Boom I: Kanako Kawabata), the face of the magazine at the time.

Pikarin's fame was not limited to just print media, as she also appeared in a television commercial for Puregumi (co-produced by Jessica Michibata) and in Juliet's "Aki Love" music video (co-produced by Mizuki Nishikawa). Furthermore, when the Shanghai Expo opened, she traveled to China with Kumiko Funayama, Misaki Deoka, Rui Suzu, Yi Son, Nana Suzuki, Miki Kawanishi, Eiri Aoki, Ri Murata, and Mai Hirose to attend the Expo and publicized gyaru culture through appearances in shows.
In the years following her gyaru debut, Pikarin began to evolve her style.
She began to experiment with different hair colors, from her natural brown to blonde, pink, and even green. She also started incorporating more punk and gothic elements into her look. This included studded belts, leather jackets, and fishnet tights.
But her fashion evolution didn't stop there. In 2014, Pikarin made the bold move of completely reinventing her image. She dyed her hair jet black and started incorporating metal and punk elements into her look, like leather jackets, fishnet tights and studded belts. She also started singing death metal music.
Pikarin's transformation into a punk and metal singer was met with mixed reactions. Some of her fans were excited to see her new look and music, while others felt that she had abandoned her gyaru roots. Despite the mixed reactions, Pikarin's new style was a hit with the younger generation, who appreciated her bold and fearless attitude.
Even now, Pikarin continues to push boundaries in the fashion world. Her style is constantly evolving, and she continues to inspire others to be themselves and not be afraid to try new things. Her journey from a shy junior high school student to a confident and iconic fashion icon is truly remarkable.
